I gave up my beloved Diet Coke and did a three day juice cleanse a couple of years ago and loved everything about it, but I’ve been in need of a refresher.
Enter: The Smoothie.
It all started with a pin I found on Pinterest (doesn’t everything?), which led me to a blog post, which led to my lusting after a Vitamix blender and ended with me rethinking the way I eat.
I have been making a ton of smoothies, in fact one a day the entire month of April and there is no end in sight. I had two today. I’m obsessed!
I’m no cook but after a month of smoothie recipes, both following them and getting creative, I can honestly say I know what I’m doing. I love how endless the options are, not to mention how delicious and nutritious smoothies are! Things that you would never think go together, like blueberries, kale and avocado, do!
Trust me.
Great for detoxing, as a meal replacement or as a way to get a lot more nutrients in your diet, smoothies are awesome.
My favorite, by far is something I call Strawberry Goodness:
1 cup oatmeal (I use Old Fashioned Quaker Oats)
1.5 cup almond milk (unsweetened)
1 huge handful of strawberries (fresh or frozen, I prefer fresh, but frozen will thicken your smoothie).
1 huge handful of spinach
1 tablespoon ground flax seed
1 teaspoon Stevia (optional)
Blend on high for about a minute and serve over ice or enjoy as is!

Smoothie shown in photo did not include spinach and therefore turned a pretty pink hue, the spinach makes it gray-ish. Please do not let the color scare you, it’s still tastes super yummy!
This post was written for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop Prompt #5: Refreshments anyone? Prepare a drink for us and share the recipe!
I did the drink one too! With strawberries too! From pinterest too! But I guess the similarities end with the vodka, triple sec, and rum. 🙂 Yours looks delicious and healthy!
Oh, alcohol would take this smoothie to a whole new level! I’ll be sure to check out your post!
Sounds delicious – it’d be a great way to get kids to eat more vegetables, too!
Exactly!! I’ve only been able to get my three year to take a couple of sips, but he hasn’t hated them, just doesn’t want his own cup.
I do love smoothies, this looks delish!
It’s so good!!
Well, it looks yum. But these juice/smoothie things make me nervous. “Clean out”, you say? Well last thing I need is a emergency evacuation to go down while I’m in the carpool line at the elementary! LOL! Words like flaxseed and spinach make me nervous…
Well, I’ve never had that experience myself. I think they just reset your system and make you feel great in the process.
Mmmm, I love smoothies made at home too! Especially when strawberries are involved. I never thought about adding oatmeal but that would be good for a full breakfast. YUM!
It’s VERY filling! Let me know what you think.
I have been tempted by smoothies, but this is the first recipe I really thought I could do. Stupid question…the oatmeal is dry?
Not a stupid question at all… the oatmeal is dry. You can let it sit in the milk for a few minutes beforehand if you have a dinosaur of a blender, like I do. Or just blend it longer and/or on a higher speed.
Are you still in Diet Coke recovery? I’m an addict, and while I have scaled back to one a day, I am entirely unwilling to give it up entirely…
I was a two-a-day DC drinker and I miss it! A lot, but I do treat myself every once in a while. Now I have a iced Chai tea latte addiction.
Yum! I have been wanting to add spinach to my smoothies. Lately I’ve been doing frozen fruit (different kinds), a banana, whey protein powder, chia seeds and either soy or almond milk. It’s great.
Do it!! You won’t even taste it! Kale is yummy too.
We can’t even get kale in France (or it’s very hard to find) and that used to be such a staple for me in NY.
Oy! Swiss chard?
Right now, I’m hooked on banana peanut butter smoothies. I have one every day. Yours sounds good, too.
Yum! I haven’t ventured into peanut/almond butter yet, but I want to!
YUM! I love smoothies. I recently discovered spinach in my smoothie and love it, b/c I wouldn’t get the vegetable any other way. They’re a great way to get the good stuff. Pinning your recipe! 😉
YUM. We love smoothies and just started putting spinach in them. So good!
I make green smoothies, with spinach, bananas, strawberries, apples, oranges and almond milk. I decided to throw oats in one day for extra fiber (as if all the fruit and vegetables weren’t enough). Have to say I was never so glad to finish a smoothie in my life! I discovered that day that I don’t like chewing my drinks….
I love smoothies too but haven’t try the green ones 😀 That smoothie recipe looks so good will have to try it soon, thank you for sharing!
Smoothies are great but I can only really do them for breakfast or a snack. I like to chew! :-)One of my roommates shattered my really nice blender so I would love to get a new one eventually.
I make a lot of vegetable smoothies and the kids love them.
I still haven’t tried oatmeal in them. Must do that soon. I’ve heard it’s good.
Thanks for every other informative blog. Exactly where otherwise could I purchase that sort of information printed in this kind of ideal usually means? I own a venture that we’re at the moment managing for, and I’ve been on the structure outside with regard to similarly info.
