When it comes to my home, I run a pretty tight ship and everything has it’s place; from my kitchen pantry and linen closet to my laundry room and everything in between. I like color coordinating and alphabetization. I thrive on cleanliness and organization. I am anal about order, putting stuff away, not leaving dishes in the sink, making the bed as soon as the last person gets up and there is no eating in my car, ever! I have a lot of stuff, but everything has a home.
Yes, all of this with a toddler.
Lucas has his own play area in our home in a room that is off from our kitchen. This is the ONE and only room of the house that I TRY to wait until the end of the day to pick up because it is his space, the place where we spend the most time together and I want him to be comfortable here and be able to make a mess and not worry about it.
Okay, when he is napping I do put everything back for Round 2.
I’m trying to teach him to “clean up” after he’s finished with one activity before moving on to the next. Let’s just say, we have a long road ahead of us…
Neither of us feel well today, so in between waiting for the bleepity bleep washing machine repair man to arrive (don’t you just love four hour windows?), watching WAY too much television and a pediatrician’s appointment, I sort of let Lucas run amok.
NOTE TO SELF #1: Disaster is bound to happen when you allow a toddler run amok.
First there was this, the mess in his bedroom, where I found dozens of puzzle pieces, books and stuffed animals strewn about and dresser drawers opened. I didn’t even know he could open them!
While I was cleaning up his bedroom, another mess was being created in a different part of the house:
Not quite the crime scene that Mommy of a Monster’s twins left her, but shocking to walk in on, nevertheless.
I’m just thankful that all pens still and their caps on. Apparently, he was after the car and/or the snack cup.
The best part is the “I didn’t do anything” look on his face.
By the way, yes, I do carry three packages of Kleenex. What’s it to ya?
Clearly, my purse isn’t quite as put together as my home.
NOTE TO SELF #2: NEVER leave purse on dining room table again!
This post is for Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop Prompt 2.) What did they get into now? Describe a time your toddler got into something they shouldn’t have.

My little one loves to play in my wallet. I don't carry a purse right now because I have a huge diaper bag so she will go digging through the diaper bag to find my wallet so she can play with it.
It is amazing what kids can get into when they have a couple minutes in a room by themselves.
Astro says
I too dread cleaning you the kids room.. They are really tornados at home.
Kimberly says
You also can't leave a teenager to run amok. They'll leave dishes in the weirdest places and you'll even find one more dirty sock the minute after you've finished all the laundry.
Leah says
Oh man! I guess that's why he always goes through my purse whenever I'm there-he's hoping there will be snacks for him in there too! : ) At least this was all easily cleanupable. Is that a word? Oh well..
Miri says
Oh, I love looking back on the disasters kids wreak. I can't say I enjoy dealing with them, but they sure are funny in retrospect!

Toddlers–always into everything! I know I couldn't keep up with one!

This was great! My wife and I are expecting our first in July and I can't wait for the days when I come home to the kids room a mess because to me… it means a good day was had! But I am sure that will only last a day or so because I know who is going to clean that up! LOL
Found you from Mama Kats!

So funny. Mine is not yet crawling. Can't say I'm looking forward to those moments.

The look on his face is priceless!

Awesome. Aren't they cute??? 😉

I think, even with all those messes, my house is still dirtier.
Soge shirts says
haha he has that look of oh no you caught me on his face.

Love his face! That look of "I'm only holding these items because you want me too, not because I'm doing something wrong" is priceless! Great post!
I stopped by for a visit from Mama Kat's, glad I did!
Gigi says
Send that kid off to boarding school, he needs to clean up after himself a little better! 🙂
Sherri says
I'm cracking up, because you are so ME about the organization, etc…! And I used to "clean up for round two" as well! Until we moved to a house with a separate playroom when my son was 2 1/2. HEAVEN. I just close the door.
But that Lucas, he's into everything! And the look on his face is priceless!
BalancingMama (Julie) says
That look on his face is great! Kids love purses & diaper bags. They must think we carry around magical (and or edible) things all the time. Instead of diapers and multiple tissue packs.
Ilana @mommyshorts says
The lesson I learned the other day— from my friend thank god— was never leave your purse under your child's feet in the car. Those three packs of tissues would have been soaked with yesterday's lunch is all I'm sayin'.

Messing up the house is the name of their game! haha
Sophie says
Mine still don't know how to tidy up after playing and they are 4 and 6! And I sometimes catch Noémi going through my make-up bag!!!! She also loves changing her clothes 4/day!!! A real little girl!
I love the expression on Lucas' face! Too cute! Great post T! xoxo
Crystal says
Oh no!! How can those little cuties make such a big mess!?
Carrie says
My youngest is a walking tornado. She seems to delight in dumping every single container of toys out all over the playroom floor!!
Sigh…I try to just let it be. As long as it's not in the rest of the house, I'm cool with ONE disaster room :p
