So, like many of you I have a Bucket List of very lofty, somewhat expensive and sort out there things I would like to do before I die, but in the meantime, I have 40 immediate goals to tackle over the next 12 months (seeing as I have sort of missed the boat on things to do BEFORE turning 40).
Actually, I am very happy with my life, the way I look and the items that fill our family calendar. Oh, sure, I wish I had my pre-pregnancy tummy back, fewer gray hairs on my head, and a lot more free time, but I’m really okay welcoming a new decade.
My 40 things, in no particular order:
- Watch all 550 minutes of The Planet Earth DVDs.
- Run at least four 5Ks. The first one is coming up on July 4!
- Sell my parents house in Arizona.
- Find a new house here, buy it and move in. Whew!
- If we aren’t going to move, finish decorating our living room.
- Raise a puppy. More on this later.
- Have a baby or at least get and stay pregnant by June, 2013. I am SO ready to get off this roller coaster.
- Read one book (at the very least) per month.
- Stop letting so many phone calls go directly to voice mail (are you reading this, Leah?).
- Successfully potty train my son. It’s time, yo!Β
- Finish writing my father’s story.
- Go easier on myself. In general. In all matters of my life.
- Resume my yoga practice.
- Walk the 1000 steps in Laguna Beach.
- Purge my stuff.
- Have an epic garage sale. See above.
- Drink more champagne.
- Take Lucas to the beach by myself. Just once.
- Schedule more one on one time with my sister.
- Take Lucas on the Radiator Springs Racers at Cars Land just as soon as he grows one inch taller. π
- Eat more salads than sandwiches. At home.
- Spend less time blogging, tweeting, status updating, pinning and playing games. For reals!
- If I have to be on Pinterest, start trying some of the shit I pin.
- Meet more local bloggers in person.
- Make out with my husband more.
- Reach out to my family across the country more often.
- Lower expectations across the board.
- Cook more. I was on a roll for a while and then got lazy.
- Try new restaurants… Pizza Ortica, Chow, The Deck, Rooftop, etc.
- When eating out at the same old places, try something different on the menu for a change.
- Never lie about my age.
- Give paddle boarding a whirl.
- Go camping.
- Consider hiring a trainer.
- When moisturizing, never forget my neck!
- Mail medical insurance claims before my husband has a cow.
- Volunteer in Lucas’ classroom.
- Leave the phone in the car and really BE in the moment.
- Spend more time outdoors.
- Stop making lists!
Happy birthday to me.
Look for updates!

Today is your birthday and it seems like today is the perfect day to do numbers 17, 25 (which could easily lead to #7), 29, 31, 35 and why not, #34 you are worth it!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONYA!
May you be filled with peace and love.
Un abrazo desde Maracaibo <3
Tonya says
Yes, I was able to start on my list on my birthday. Champagne, new restaurant and we booked a camping trip!
Andrea Negro says
I remember reading your 100 things to do BUCKET list. I also wanted to learn to do my eyes, smokey eye specifically, but I havenβt yet.
Tonya says
I need to revisit that bucket list. I haven’t mastered the smoky eye yet either. Sigh.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, wonderful Friend! You’re one of the most beautiful & youngest 40 y/o that know!
Your list is great! I agree with being less on Twitter, FB etc and making most of “real” life! We can spend so much time checking our phone, computer, iPad etc that we’ll soon be wearing glasses because we won’t be able to type or read without them! Plus, there are loads of great things to do outside! However, I’ll miss reading you if you did stop doing all these things!
I def want to see you doing a garage sale and BTW, camping isn’t that bad! It can be quite fun, for ONE night π
I really, really hope for #7 for you.
You can have a lot of #17, today π
Sending you 40 hugs and lots of love xoxo
Tonya says
#7 is my all the time wish. π Thank you for your love, support, friendship and encouragement. It’ll happen. But first a puppy!
Sophie says
Check my timing out! 12 a.m.!!!!!!

Love your impeccable timing, friend! xoxo

Happy 40th, my friend. I wish for you #7 – the most. xo
Tonya says
I know, who am I kidding?! I adore list making.
I think it’s a sickness.
Kir says
I absolutely know that you will do every single one of these things…I’d love to do some of them with you and witness the others….watching your smile light up as u check it off your list.
40 looks fantastic on you my sweet amazing friend. Love Love Love xoxo
Tonya says
Thanks so much, my wonderful friend!! I will keep you posted and maybe send photos too. π Much love to you. xoxo
Stephanie says
Happy Birthday!! Wishing you a fabulous day. Maybe with lots of champagne π
That is a good bucket list, praying that you can check off #7. #30 rings a bell, I am bad for ordering what I KNOW I will like. Good luck with the purge and garage sale, I love having a garage sale (I know, weird right)but the husband and kids are out of the way for the day and when I am not busy with customers I can read a book π
Tonya says
Thanks, Stephanie!!
There may have been some champagne consumed on my birthday. What better time, right?
I am such a creature of habit when it comes to frequenting the same restaurants. I ALWAYS order the same thing. BORING!! I really need to get out of that rut.
I have never had a garage sale and we need to desperately!! I’ll be coming to you for tips when it’s time.
Natalie says
I’m with you on the Pinterest one π
Happy Birthday and I after reading your list, I have some more to add to my bucket list now!
Tonya says
I was a roll there for a while and now I just pin. Sigh.
Jackie says
Awesome list! Now…. here’s the question…. which one are you conquering today?
Happy Birthday!
Tonya says
Champagne, make out session, new restaurant and a camping trip was booked! π
Practical Parenting says
Happy birthday! What a great list! xoxo
Tonya says
Thanks, I had fun putting it together. Looking forward to a great year!
Sarah says
Happy Birthday! Love the list. As for #17. Drink more champagne, I suggest making Fridays Champagne Fridays – this is something my friends and I do whether we are together or sending pictures of our glasses to each other. A great way to unwind from the week and connect with friends briefly!
Tonya says
I LOVE that idea!! Too much. Champagne is delicious.
Jess says
Love this list and I know that you will accomplish everything on here. I wish I was closer so I could drink more champagne with you.
Tonya says
Champagne is so good!
Katie says
I need to do about 75% of this list too! Including moisturizing my neck! Why do I always forget that??
Also? I love how ambitious you are about not being as ambitious anymore. This is why I love you! Also that a list item is to not make lists.
he he!
Tonya says
I don’t know who I’m kidding, I couldn’t live without my lists?
Our poor necks.
Kimberly says
So many of these things are on my list too. I so wish I lived closer so I could meet you in person and share that champagne!
Happy Birthday! xo
Tonya says
Indeed. Wouldn’t that be sweet? Virtual cheers. π
angela says
Happy Birthday to you! This is a fabulous list!

Hi. I just found you. And I’m glad I did! I have a Lucas too! He is also 2. And I’ve been thinking a lot about the whole turning 40 thing and what I want to do. (I’ll be 40 in 2013). On my list is a tattoo. My dad just died suddenly and tragically 9 weeks ago (hence the depressing blog link) and I’m thinking about getting his handwriting of Lucas’ name on my wrist. So glad I found you. I’ll be back!
Tonya says
I’m so glad you found me too!
I’m terribly sorry about the loss of your father. I love the idea of a memorial tattoo. I lost both of my parents five years ago and have two stars on my foot for them.
The loss still hurts but having Lucas helps, of course. I miss them everyday.
I’ll check out your blog soon and in the meantime, I’m sending love and peace.
