Last night Lucas finally went to sleep somewhere between 8:00 and 8:30, after multiple pleads visits from both Mom and Dad to “settle down”.
I love this time of the day, the hours that we reclaim our house and get to enjoy the peace, the calm after the storm, if you will; a real conversation, a movie from start to finish or other adult activity.
Tonight, however, went something more like this….
Todd nestled in our bed with his laptop to write an appraisal for work and I was in the living room spread out on the couch watching TV, computer on my lap and wine in hand. I was tweeting, pinteresting, catching up on blogs and above all, relaxing, in other words, I was multitasking.
It was after 10:00 by the time I made it to bed. Todd was asleep shortly there after. I laid next to him quietly and read for an hour and a half… 100 pages!
At 11:45 I turned off the light.
There in the dark, even though I said I wasn’t going to do it, it beckoned me.
And you know what happened next… one Website sent me to another and then another and another and another and…
I played six turns of Scrabble (scored one bingo!), five turns of Words With Friends, tweeted more, pinned five new items, checked out my Facebook news feed, commented, “liked”, listened to the whirl of the dish washer run through nine cycles, nudged my partner a couple of times to stop the snoring, thought I heard Lucas open the door to his room twice and all the while cursing myself for being up past my bedtime AGAIN!
Then I wrote typed this post.
Stupid phone.
(Written and) sent from my iPhone

But you wrote a post … those are the nights that I think about writing a post, or have great ideas for a post … don’t take any notes … and cannot remember one word of the brilliance I had in my head the next morning 😉
Tonya says
I did, another glorious thing about having an iPhone and not being able to sleep!
Sherri says
Oh, staying up so late is HARD! But there are so many things to keep your interest…
Tonya says
I need to learn to keep my phone in a different room or in a safe for which I do not have the combination at night.
Robbie says
I have such a hard time going to bed at a decent hour b/c I love the freedom of being the only one in the house awake. I love getting to do what I WANT!
Tonya says
Yes, that’s exactly it!!
Alison@Mama Wants This says
Falling asleep sitting up with fingers on my laptop has taught me that staying up past my bedtime is NOT a good idea 🙂
But your night sounds so productive!
Tonya says
Sleep is so vital to the stay-at-home-mom. I need to make that my new mantra!
angela says
That sounds lovely! I love the multi-task. And past bedtime? Yes, here I am, wandering around (1 am EST). Ooops.
Tonya says
Gotcha! So, I’m NOT alone. 🙂
Jess says
Sounds like my night tonight (and every other night).
Tonya says
It’s such a bad habit!
I need to disconnect and read more books. I WANT to disconnect and read more books, but that damn phone, I tell ya!

I, honestly, can’t remember the last time I didn’t fall asleep as I put the kids to bed. If I’m lucky, I’ll wake up at a half-decent hour and actually try to pretend that I’m an adult for a little bit . . . grab a glass of wine, watch something that doesn’t involve or remind me of Calliou,
give my wife 3.83 seconds of unadulterated pleasureactually spend some quality time with my wife . . . but, anytime that happens, well, the twitter sucks me in, and then I have to check Facebook to see if so & so had her baby, or how that other person’s pregnancy is going along . . . oh, and did Bob get the house that he bid on? How are little Charlie’s piano lessons progressing? Then it’s 4am.
Tonya says
It’s crazy… Social networking rocks, but it is the BIGGEST time suck there is.
Oh, and Calliou needs to be shot!
Shell says
I have the hardest time actually turning everything off and going to sleep. I’ll turn off my computer and say I’m done… and then I get sucked in by the phone.
Tonya says
That’s exactly what I do! I need to leave my phone in a different room…. I’d much rather curl up with a book.

Staying up past when I know I should be sleeping is a glorious luxury I rarely indulge in. Every so often I just need some quiet, late night, alone time.
So glad you had some time…hope you aren’t totally exhausted today!
Tonya says
I was beyond exhausted, but tonight will most likely be a repeat. Sigh.
Galit Breen says
Oh sweet friend, *so* been there!
{Love the picture that you added! So clever!}
Tonya says
Thanks. It really does help to know I’m not alone. Social networking sites and the Internet are awesome until it’s after midnight, then they are just stupid.
Kristen says
I’m on my phone now. I told myself I was going to go to bed early tonight to make up for a crazy night. Instead, I tucked myself in and grabbed my phone. Ugh! It’s a love/dislike relationship. Good luck getting some rest tonight!
Tonya says
I stay up past my bedtime most nights, but usually not until after 1 AM.
That phone is all caps EVIL!
Leanne says
I do that ALL the time. But at least it’s an addiction that doesn’t hurt anyone… 🙂
Brittany Stewart says
This post is so perfect because it is seriously what I do all the time – like tonight.
And in the morning we always pay for it.
But at least you did get the post in, I would have likely pinned, tweeted and read all night without accomplishing anything tangible.
Kimberly says
Oh my goodness, this is me. Every. Single. Night.
It’s awful!
Ashley says
See, this is where you win. I would normally be up, watching some stupid history channel repeat that the hubby loves and mentally writing a post that I would have NO recollection of in the morning. Whereas you actually write everything down on your phone. God I’m lazy 🙂
Poppy says
I know I shouldn’t be impressed, but dang girl whipping out a post on your phone is impressive! If only I were that organized. I’d still be drooling over something I’ll never make on Pinterest. I have electronic ADHD after dark.
Leah says
It is because of all of that that I have only one game of Scrabble going on, I don’t sign up to Pinterest, I hardly blog, I never read any blogs but yours of course and I try not looking at Facebook or Twitter after 10 or so. And yet STILL I never manage to get to sleep till well after 11 most nights. And I don’t have a 2 year old running around either! Geesh!
